Every album has its unlikely favorite, and “Home is Where the Heart Breaks” is mine. Webster once again employs counterpoint to deliver devastating lyrics with an upbeat sound that eventually opens into full rockabilly. Carl Basler lets the light in right away with his friendly electric guitar, underscored by Webster’s warm acoustic and an abiding hi-hat, as Billy sings “They say you only hurt the ones you love, well if that’s true, nobody’s ever loved me the way that you do.” The chorus offsets love’s sting with nostalgia for its perfection, picking up the “singing to sleep” seed planted in “Erica,” along with “cry yourself to sleep” from “Hang On,” with “I still remember when you used to come into my room, and sit by me by the light of the moon, and I would sing you to sleep, and think up promises that you can’t keep, and sing away the heartache, sing away the heartache,” accompanied by full Sha Na Na sha-la-las, “But now home is where the heart breaks, home is where the heart breaks.” The song is so catchy you carry its sadness in you forever.

Lyrics

You think you’re dying
You’re living a lie
You think you’re crying
But both of your eyes are dry
The only water is the
Rain that’s falling out of the sky
Your friends are calling
You’re already waving goodbye
They say you only hurt the ones you love, well if that’s true
Nobody’s ever loved me the way that you do

I still remember when you used to come into my room
And sit by me by the light of the moon
I would sing you to sleep
And make up promises that you can’t keep
And sing away the heartache, sing away the heartache
But now home is where the heart breaks
Home is where the heart breaks

It’s the story of boy meets girl
A blaze of glory, here at the end of the world
This ain’t no happy little ever after, it’s here and now
Broken promises, masquerading as vows
They say you only hurt the ones you love, well if that’s true
Nobody’s ever loved you the way that I do

I still remember when you used to come into my room
And sit by me by the light of the moon
And now you look right through me
Straight at somebody that I can’t see
And dream away the heartache, dream away the heartache
‘Cause now home is where the heart breaks
Home is where the heart breaks
