“Blood Shot” takes the foot back off the pedal for a lovely romantic breather. One has to contemplate who might be the lucky recipient of Billy Webster’s love songs, which always combine an earthiness, a respectfulness and mutuality (“I’m gonna lift up my voice, and I’m gonna just see you shine, baby it’s your life and it’s your choice, and I’m not choosing for you”), and always something celestial. Here he finds heaven (“I got a little bit of you right now, and that means heaven to me”) in the immediacy and even awkwardness of embodied love (“I wanna tell you but I don’t know how, I’m tongue-tied and my eyes are too bloodshot to see”), moving in medias res into the joys of desire (“Do you wanna stay up all night, baby we can just sleep all day”) and destiny (“Have you ever seen me before, ’cause I dreamed you a million times”) in a catchy groove whose parts are connected by a wonderful bridge (“I am not too blind to see that you and I were meant to be”). The song’s closing lines perfectly capture Webster’s voluptuous romantic ethic: “You’re living inside my mind, and threw a party up in my soul, you committed my favorite crime, and now you’re out on parole.”

Lyrics

Do you wanna stay up all night?
Baby, we can just sleep all day
Don’t care about wrong or right
We just wanna be free

I don’t wanna give up my love
I just wanna take you away
Not talking about up above
‘Cause that means nothing to me

I got a little piece of you right now
And that means heaven to me
I wanna tell you but I don’t know how
I’m tongue tied and my eyes are too
Bloodshot to see

Have you ever seen me before?
I’ve dreamed you a million times
I’m coming right to your door
And here’s what I’m gonna do

I’m gonna lift up my voice
I’m gonna just see you shine
It’s your life, baby it’s your choice
And I’m not choosing for you

(chorus)

Acting with impunity
You miss the opportunity
But I am not too blind to see
That you and I were meant to be

You were living inside my mind
Threw a party up in my soul
You committed my favorite crime
And now you’re out on parole

(chorus)
