  1. You Walk In

From the recording The One Thing You Need (2020)

“You Walk In” hits with an almost punk drive, and then like a peated whiskey opens into something softer, more playful and nuanced, with notes of pop and rockabilly. Webster’s vocal is reminiscent of David Bowie in “Suffragette City,” with similar resonant swagger, as he ponders the dualities of aspirational rock-and-roll image and fame and the struggles of diurnal existence.

Lyrics

You gotta use all of your senses
And you gotta choose better defenses
Taking you all the way
Make a new start today
You walk in, you walk out
You walk in, you walk out

You got a sound everyone dreams about
You got a look making me scream and shout
Taking up the hill
Or nobody ever will
You’re a scene, you’re a shade
Got it good, got it made

Everybody loves to think you’re crazy
When they’re working from nine to five
And everybody loves to think they’re hipper
When their honey’s from a lower hive
But people want to see you on a stadium stage
And you’re too busy picking up a minimum wage
You walk in, you walk out
You got a minor complication, gotta work it on out
I said you...you’re gonna be a star

You gotta take desperate measures
You gotta choose plastic or leather
Dressing you up for fun
You never wear only one
You walk in to the sound
Of a crowd coming ‘round

Everybody loves to think you’re crazy
When they’re working from nine to five
And everybody loves to think they’re hipper
When their honey’s from a lower hive
But people want to see you on a stadium stage
And you’re too busy picking up a minimum wage
You walk in, you walk out
You got a minor complication, gotta work it on out
I said you...you’re gonna be a star
