I don't imagine when you wrote and recorded "Seen My Soul" that you realized it would be the most popular song on the album, and in fact my true favorite. It must even be a little irritating to write such gorgeous, perfect, poetic elegies as "Eulogy" and have people enthuse about this infinitely funky riff. But it is just so sweet, so irresistible. I have listened to it a million times. I put it on repeat on those long drives to DC and back and listened to it over and over. I know from my own experience how thousands of hours logged of dogged work doing what I feel is my true great work can lead to a moment of somewhat different and oblique effortless perfection such as this song. I don't know how this can't become a hit, can't crack things open for you so that people can also revel in all that other true great work. You must have been in rare form when you wrote this, exactly as the song describes. It's just so funky, so right; it never hesitates, never falters, just goes on and on with this fantastic, inventive groove, and I never wanted it to end. I marvel at the musicality, that Beastie Boys dissonance, the baseline, your stamina and virtuosity in the performance, the astonishing progression through which the chorus becomes the verse, turning everything on its head just the way the song turns everything on its head, a defiant anthem to fucking things up in the name of the muse. Soul food indeed. "No red wine, your lies are white," is my favorite line on the whole album. - Ethan

Lyrics

Well the night comes up and the sun goes down
I got my sneakers on my feet and my feet on the ground
I got my one-y lit and my girl is gone
I got a brand new beat, I got a brand new song

I got the words flowing out as if you would know
You got the tap dance baby and I’m sick of the show
I got a girl on my left and a boy on my right
They’re going on and on, I’m going off tonight

You put up a barrier, you build a fence
You blow up your house, you live in a tent
You give up your power, your power’s all gone
You’re living like clutter all over the lawn
Then you mow it all down, you give yourself time
Time to grow and mess with your mind
You’re acting crazy, you’re acting so rude
The rest is history, the rest is soul-food

Has anybody seen my soul? Forty dollars nothing more.
No red wine when lies are white. A brown and peach-brown colored night

There’s gotta be more than the weak and the strong
Well you both could be right and you both could be wrong
Your opinion’s broke, there’s blood on your neck
And it’s hard to express with love and respect

You cut it all down, you give yourself time
Time to grow and mess with your mind
I got my bag on tight, I got a bus to move on
So watch out kid, I’m gonna get my grove on

Forty days fly by like dream flight
I walked alone all through the long night
I spoke to the devil and I spoke to God
I’m an American cuckoo, and isn’t that odd?
Well one is the sweet dirt, one is the grass
One will remain, the other must pass
So hold on the life and give yourself time
Time to grow and mess with your mind

Has anybody seen my soul? Forty dollars nothing more.
No red wine when lies are white. A brown and peach-brown colored night
I emptied out the attic floor, I stuck it to the wall for love
I would not sing out of respect, I bent so hard I broke my neck
Quickly spending on the street, I need action in false light
I took a torch to the whole town, I found my fun and I burned it down
A village full of turnstile miles, I held my breath and I jumped them all
No, they never posted bail, and no I never went to jail

Has anybody, anybody seen my soul
Forty odd dollars and nothing more
No red wine, your lies are white
A brown and peach-brown, a color code night

Well I tripped and emptied the attic floor
I stuck it the wall, I stuck it to the door
I took a flame to the rest, to the shit, to the town
Well I found my fun and I burned it all down

I held my breath, I jumped my bale
I never turned back, I never went to jail
I got a bleeding heart and a tickle in my mind
I leave a trail of thoughts and mad tears behind
I got a new guitar and a worn out muse
I still attack the world, I still light my fuse
I light it up and out, I got a brand new mind
I do it all the way, I do it all the time, yeah.
